Correct use of urea solution
Urea aqueous solution is a concentration-stable urea solution (composed of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionized water), used to reduce nitrogen oxides in vehicle exhaust after combustion.
Why can't ordinary chemical fertilizer urea be used?
Ordinary fertilizer urea, due to its high content of biuret, mechanical impurities, formaldehyde, and metal ions, can cause catalyst poisoning in SCR exhaust after-treatment systems and damage components such as the urea pump. If irreversible damage occurs, it would result in significant losses for users. Additionally, fertilizer urea is prone to crystallization at low temperatures and cannot guarantee the concentration of the urea solution, leading to low nitrogen oxide conversion rates. Moreover, ammonia leakage can damage the SCR system, preventing vehicles from meeting emission standards.
Environmental significance
The nitric acid formed by the combination of NOx and water in the air is a major cause of acid rain. At the same time, NOx reacts with other pollutants under ultraviolet light to produce photochemical smog pollution, which is extremely harmful to the atmosphere and consequently has a significant impact on human health. Therefore, the act of adding water as a substitute for urea solution should be rejected and opposed.
The Importance of Concentration
Concentrations that are too high or too low not only fail to improve the conversion efficiency of nitrogen oxides but also result in residual ammonia causing secondary pollution. The choice of a 32.5% concentration is because the crystallization point of the urea aqueous solution is lower at this concentration (freezing point -11°C).
Storage Precautions
Because the urea solution is prone to contamination by impurities after opening or to algae growth when exposed to sunlight, and urea itself decomposes to release ammonia gas, leading to volatilization and deterioration of the solution, it is better to store the urea solution as required by the supplier during summer.
Usage Suggestions
1. Select automotive urea solution that meets the standards, ensuring a concentration of 32.5%.
2. Avoid using common chemical fertilizers such as urea or diluting with water.
3. Pay attention to the storage environment, avoiding high temperatures, direct sunlight, and contamination.
4. Regularly check the quality and concentration of the urea solution.
5. Add and replace as required by the vehicle manual in a timely manner.
Proper use of urea solution not only protects the vehicle's SCR system and extends equipment lifespan, but more importantly, it effectively reduces nitrogen oxide emissions, safeguards the environment, and contributes to blue skies and white clouds.
